RTA Kicks Off B. GREEN Campaign

Public transportation plays a significant role in finding smart solutions to the environmental challenges facing America. While transit clearly benefits those who use the system, even larger benefits accrue to all citizens in the form of more livable communities, reducing traffic congestion, improving air quality, reducing energy consumption, and allows for both transit agencies and individuals to reduce their carbon footprint. The RTA has recently adopted a Sustainability Program to further advance the local environment through public transit. Below you will find a few striking facts about the benefits of public transportation in the environmental realm. ‘B’ green. Coastal Bend!

Our engine coolant is not the only thing that’s green.

The RTA saves the Coastal Bend 11.5 million in Congestion
Relief Benefits which includes riders’ savings in travel
time, vehicle maintenance, enhanced safety,
and improved air quality.**

The RTA has solar panel lighting in bus stop shelters.
Recycle bins are placed throughout RTA offices for
paper, plastic, and cardboard.

RTA recycles oil, batteries, ink cartridges, oil filters,
absorbent clay and pads, light bulbs, metal, and parts solvents.

Public transportation saves 37 million metric tons of carbon dioxide annually.*

If an individual switches a 20-mile round-trip commute to public transportation, his or her annual CO2 emissions will decrease by 4,800 pounds per year.*

April 2010

April has been a busy month for the RTA. We hosted the Texas Transit Association Conference, State Bus Roadeo, and Expo...whew...we had a wonderful time with other transit employees and stakeholders from around our great State of Texas!

On the same day we participated in Earth Day Bay Day downtown at Cole Park. Earth Day Bay Day is a wonderful event for all those who realize the importance of saving our planet and a superb learning expereince for those who are not quite sure how to make a little difference. For goodies we gave out biodegradable recycled pens and wildflower seed paper with facts and information on how public transportation is a 'green' mode of transportation. Thanks Earth Day Bay Day for providing us a great lead in to our future marketing campaign of B green.

Here are some pictures for your enjoyment!
